We’ll visit the whole island over the course of one day in our Land Rover Defender 110.
Starting from the south, we’ll take the only paved road on the island and various dirt roads.
We’ll be able to observe the many distinctive characteristics of the landscape, its surprising biodiversity, the vegetation, as well as its terrain and historical features. We will visit the outside of the former maximum security prison, as well as the various penal colony buildings that were once active on the island and we’ll stop for a swim and some relaxation on one of the loveliest beaches on the island. Lastly, we’ll arrive to the village of Cala d’Oliva, which was founded by Ligurian fishermen and is now uninhabited.
We’ll be able to observe all the animals in their wild state: albino donkeys, grey donkeys, horses and mouflons. Birdwatching activity.
In certain periods we can also visit the Wildlife Study Centre, a wildlife bird observatory where the researchers are happy to explain their activities, and the Marine Animal Rescue Centre, where turtles and other marine animals in distress are treated and then released into the wild once again.

We’ll then take the paved road once again and visit the outside of the former maximum security prison in Fornelli, an important part of the island’s history.
Continuing north and skirting along the entire eastern side of the coast, we’ll get to Tumbarino, an old penal colony that currently houses the Wildlife Observatory that conducts scientific bird ringing and can be visited in the spring and autumn. We’ll then continue by skirting the western coast, almost directly above the sea, towards the central section that consists of a vast plain, just before which stands an ossuary that holds the bones of prisoners of war. It is right in front of the beach of the same name.
A little further ahead we can stop at Campu Perdu, another old penal colony that is now a riding centre.
Continuing on, you will see the house of the former lighthouse keeper, which is now the Marine Animal Rescue Centre, which can be visited. A stop at Cala Reale follows, which holds the buildings of the former Maritime Quarantine Station, some of which have been renovated by Asinara National Park for new purposes. Refreshment point.
We’ll then continue on towards the north east and arrive in the stunning, uninhabited village of Cala d’Oliva, where you can visit a penal colony, known as Diramazione Centrale, which is currently used for environmental education purposes, as well as the so-called Bunker. We’ll go on towards Cala Sabina/Cala Giordano beaches for some relaxation and a swim. Shaded tables and benches can be found on the beach. Packed lunch.

Useful advice
We recommend wearing comfortable, sporty clothing on our excursions. It is also good to bring a camera and binoculars so that you can catch the various nuances that the island has to offer, its plants, the animals and the landscape. For bathing during the summer we recommend bringing flippers and a mask so that you can appreciate our extraordinary marine biodiversity.
You cannot leave bags of rubbish on the island and, as there are no bins along the trails, you will have to bring them back with you.
Smoking is forbidden, with the exception of the areas close to Fornelli, Cala Reale and Cala d’Oliva docks.
Feeding the wild animals, picking the island’s flowers, plants and minerals are all prohibited. The only thing you can take with you is the lovely memory of our Avventura!
AsinarAvventura accepts no responsibility for any damage suffered and/or caused to people and/or objects during the motorboat crossing, it being understood that the excursion begins and finishes upon arrival and departure from the island.
Departure and arrival times may be subject to change due to adverse weather and sea conditions.
AsinarAvventura also reserves the right to cancel the excursion if adverse weather conditions jeopardize the visit on the island, by postponing the excursion or coming to an agreement with the guide on an alternative solution.
